I enjoyed giving a demonstration on holiday flower arranging to a well-attended event at Boxwood Home & Interiors in New Canaan, CT yesterday. I thought I would use this weeks “buzz” to post some photos from the event (co-sponsored by Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Magazine) and to share some tips with all of you:
Above all else, arrangements should be simple and easy.
It is important to have good containers, both clear and more decorative. They do not have to be expensive. Jamali Garden is my fail-safe store for small silver Julep vases. Antique or reproduction tulipieres are always great – try John Rosselli Antiques or Gump’s.
A good looking arrangement can be made with items that are readily available at your local market or flower shop. To fill BeeLine’s Parish Cachepot, I used clementines, pears and galax leaves.
Filler always costs less than blooms. To make your arrangement more cost-saving, try using seeded eucalyptus, hydrangeas, or magnolia leaves. Also, various berries give an arrangement great texture.
Holiday-specific blooms that I particularly like are amaryllis, calla lilies, ranunculus, and parrot tulips.
Cluster votives candles around your arrangement to make a real centerpiece.
